Do I need insurance as a make up artist?

The short answer is yes, you do need insurance to cover your public liability (when working with the general public as a business) as well as cover for yourself in the event of a mishap, accident or in what we fear the most as artists, a serious adverse reaction to a make up or skincare product that we, as the make up artist, would be responsible for. Since April 2023, 'time spent' as a self taught make up artist is no longer acceptable to be covered by a beauty insurance provider. The good news is, the process to gain insurance for your make up artistry business is still pretty straight forward. There are now dedicated insurance providers for the beauty industry that are affordable and offer as much coverage as you need without any real complication. The only obstacle you will come across is that any insurance provider will now ask to see your certification in the service you provide to show you have obtained some form of formal training in your field. In your case, and in the event that you need to make a claim on your policy, they would ask to see a certificate of training in make up artistry. The Scottish Make Up Academy offers two accredited day courses, The Professional Make Up Artistry Course and the Advanced Bridal Make Up Artistry Course, both accredited, approved and insured by ABT. An added bonus to passing these courses is that ABT award you a 10% discount on your business insurance policy too, so everyone wins. I hope this helps!
